The U.S. military is full of rough and ready soldiers … among the best in the world. But within the ranks are the “Special Forces” — the most elite warriors whose specialties are impressive, to say the least. This is the most revered and feared force in all the world.
Special Forces (SF) Soldiers are the experts in unconventional warfare. They deploy on a variety of missions all over the world. They are the specialized ‘minutemen’ of today’s Army — highly trained and ready to go anywhere at a moment’s notice.
Special Forces missions are sensitive in nature and sometimes classified. Because Special Forces teams can be the first point of contact in negotiations with foreign or guerilla parties, they must keep the highest level of professionalism at all times.
In order to start training as a Special Forces Soldier, you must have completed the following courses:
- Basic Combat Training
- Advanced Individual Training
- Airborne School
Realize this … the Roman Catholic Church has ALWAYS been considered among the elite in “Spiritual Warfare.” Sure, there’s the old expression, “If you need an exorcism, who are you going to call?” But, I am talking about everyday spiritual warfare.
As St. Paul wrote,
“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” 2 Corinthians 10:4
Catholics have always had a heighten sense of “spiritual realities,” whether good or evil. Why? Because they have always been well trained in the “art of spiritual combat.” Catholics knew full well, for example, that one should never face the forces of evil without, first, being “Armored Up!” In other words, they knew that once one fell out of a “state of grace,” they were an easy target for the assaults of the devil.
St. Paul wrote,
“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:10-12
Most important, like the first rule among elite fighting forces, they knew how to follow orders; they knew how to obey! Catholics understood that God has continued to reveal “His Way” through the teachings of the Church and the lives of the saints. This means embracing things that the world may consider foolish and just plain silly. I am referring to such things as the Sacrament of Penance, the Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist, devotions, sacramentals, and indulgenced prayers. These are some of the most powerful spiritual weapons available.
I’ve come to understand that the most significant part of our training is when we can “get over ourselves” and let go, and let God rule in our lives. And so God offers His Son in a way that looks like bread, and we accept that. God tells us to go to a priest to be forgiven, and we accept that. God tells us, through His saints, that certain medals and scapulars and prayers are powerful, and we accept that. God has been doing this from the very beginning, when He asked Adam and Eve to refrain from a certain tree, or when He told Moses to tap on a rock in a certain way. The fact that the worldly find these things ridiculous is precisely the point God is making … Are we willing to do, even what is seen as nutty by the world, in order to do it “God’s Way?”
All this being said, we only need look around at the condition of our Church today to know that the vast majority of Catholics have abandoned virtually all of this spiritual arsenal God has revealed to us. More than that, now less than half of Catholics believe in the Real Presence and most have long since abandoned the Sacrament of Penance. This has left us puny and weak and prone to compromise with the world, and the prince of the world. And so, the devil finds very little, if any, obstacles standing in his way. It’s no wonder why Catholic Ireland recently betrayed God and Church, as they voted in favor of Gay marriage, abandoning the very bedrock foundation of civilization.
When I was growing up, a popular sit-com on TV was called “F Troop.” F Troop is set at Fort Courage — a fictional United States Army outpost in the Old West—from just at the end of the American Civil War in 1865 to at least 1867. Fort Courage was a dumping ground for the Army’s least useful soldiers and misfits, who had no idea how to soldier or follow commands. It was a remote outpost, so they could do these least amount of damage to the cause of the war.
Have we Catholics become the “F Troop” of God’s army? Once considered an elite fighting force against the powers of evil, we seem to have slumped into a bungling group of misfits who no longer know how to fight.
I contend that this is why evil is running unabated in our times. This elite fighting force has, until now, kept the devil at bay. When we were once that elite force, evil would retreat, waiting for opportunity. The wait was long … many centuries of devout Catholics, cherishing and adhering to all of the spiritual accoutrements revealed to us by God’s mighty saints. Now, in our times, we seem to feel we have transcended these “ways of God.” We feel we are far superior to our ancestors. We have no need to follow direction, because “we have a mind of our own.” So here we sit, in the remote outpost that is our man-centered and happy-clappy liturgies, while the enemy runs roughshod over our loved ones and the world.
The time is now to enlist in a new “Special Forces Training,” and prepare ourselves to, once again, meet the enemy with an elite fighting force!
I have written a book on this called, “Church Militant Field Manual (Special Forces Training for the Life in Christ).” Also, we have amassed a Facebook group of nearly 3,300 (to date) who are choosing this training. The group is called, “Special Forces Training.”

Let’s become the elite fighting force we once were!
